Upcycled Plaid Scarf Wreath

Here in Washington, the snow has really been snowing! So I decided that I needed a new winter wreath. I browsed Pinterest for some inspiration, and I found several cute scarf wreaths. My favorite was a pin for a green plaid scarf wreath that was also upcycled, and I also was inspired by a pin for holiday wreath that has different plaid fabrics. Why haven't I heard of scarf wreaths before!?!  Ideally, I would have liked to use a crochet or knit scarf to make a scarf wreath like in the pin I found for a super quick knit scarf wreath. But I when I started this project, I couldn't think of a scarf that I've already made that would be good for this project... But just now while I'm typing this, I thought of a denim knit scarf I made years ago that would've been perfect for this. I think it's in my closet somewhere, so when I find it, I might make another scarf wreath. 😁 Anyhoo, I decided to upcycle a plaid dress my daughter outgrew awhile ago for this project.
SUPPLIES:
plaid fabric (upcycled dress)

I searched through my daughter's closet for something plaid and found this plaid tunic dress.

I cut the dress into 3 strips.

I cut this piece out and trimmed it down. I'm going to use it as a wreath hanger.

I started wrapping a strip of the plaid fabric around the wreath form.

I wrapped another piece of fabric around the wreath form.

I continued to wrap the fabric around the wreath form until it was completely covered. I added glue to secure it in place.

I tied a piece of plaid fabric to the bottom of the wreath to make it look like a scarf is tied onto the wreath.

I glued a floral pick with a white pinecone, silver ornament, and silver berries to the center of the bottom of the wreath. I added a glittery white antler to each side of the floral pick. And then I added a couple green bells.

I used the strip with the buttons to hang the wreath from my front door, but....

I read a message in a Facebook group for our Navy base (We're a navy family) where an organization called Trees for Troops was giving away free trees and wreaths on base this weekend. We already had our usual white (fake) tree with blue lights, so I told my husband to just pick up a wreath. Well, my husband brought home this lovely wreath AND a 7 foot tall real tree! They were trying really hard to give away all the trees they had, so they convinced my husband to take a tree. I'm glad he brought it home! It's such a fabulous tree. I've never had a real tree before, and I thought it was complicated, but it's not! It just needs a little water. 🎄

So I decided to hang this wreath on the wall in my craft room, and I think this is the perfect spot for it.

Thanks so much for stopping by and checking out my Upcycled Plaid "Scarf" Wreath!

Welcome to the December Sustainable Pinterest Challenge! The purpose of the Sustainable Pinterest Challenge (hosted by Julie @ Sum of Their Stories) is to create a sustainable/eco-friendly project that is inspired by a wonderful pin you found on Pinterest. This month's theme is Winter, so I created a scarf wreath by upcycling a dress my daughter has outgrown. I hope you'll visit the other participant's crafty, eco-friendly Winter creations below! ↓

  1. Your wreath is lovely, you'd never know it wasn't made from a scarf but upcycled fabric instead. And the way you used the button placket to hang it is so clever - waste not want not!
Having said that if you have the chance to hang a gorgeous natural wreath like the one you were given on your front door over Christmas you'd be mad not to! What a stunner! Good luck with the real tree too, they generally smell amazing don't they? Just be ready to sweep up the dropped needles as needed!

    1. Thanks so much! I'm loving the natural wreath and the real tree. I vaccuumed around it this morning, and it's not so bad. The only problem I'm having is keeping the cats out the tree, especially the youngest kitty. He's about 7 months old, so this is his first Christmas.

  2. How creative to use your daughter's dress to make a wreath! It turned out really pretty and one you can keep up the entire winter season! Although nothing beats hanging the real thing on your door (which looks amazing) and even having a real tree to decorate! Have fun and enjoy the holiday season!

  3. That dress was the perfect choice for a holiday wreath...love the antlers! Enjoy your real tree this season. We always had a real tree when I was growing up and it made the house smell so good!

    1. Thanks! I really love the smell of the tree. I'm always burning woodsy or pine scented candles, so I really love the smell of the tree.

  4. Your upcycled wreath turned out great! That was a clever hanger idea, too. I like that you paired the plaid fabric with the antlers as it gives it a rustic look. You're going to love smelling that fresh tree!

    1. Thanks so much! I love rustic decor, so when I saw the antlers in my pile of ornaments, I knew I wanted them on this wreath.

  5. What a beautiful wreath! I absolutely love those antlers. It's so awesome when people acknowledge our men & women in uniform. They give up so much to keep us safe both at home & abroad (we wives do too, don't we!). A 7' tree & a wreath is an amazing way for them to say thank you for all you do! Tell your hubby thanks from our family to him and thank you and your children for everything you give up while your hubby serves!!!

    1. Awww, thanks so much, Niki! We're always thankful when our sailor is home for the holidays, so we really enjoy this time of year together. Our family is really enjoying the real tree, and the kids had lots of fun decorating it. I really appreciate whenever anyone or any organization shows their appreciation/support for the military.

  6. It's a lovely wreath, T'onna! I love the fabric's pattern and colors, they really compliment all the ornaments you put together on the wreath, especially the antlers. Love the wreath that your hubby brought home, too. Now, you've got two beautiful wreaths for the holiday.
