Long Tail Snowman Scarf

When I think of winter, I think of snow. And boy did we have some snow a couple weeks ago. There's still a little snow lingering on the ground. Whenever it snows, I just have to build a snowman. This time, I didn't feel like actually going outside in the snow, so I crocheted one instead! I've been wanting to make the Long Tail Frosty Scarf (pattern by Snappy Tots) for a while, and I'm so glad I finally got around to making it.
This scarf is designed to look loke a snowman wearing a brim hat with a pom pom at the end. The designer of this pattern used a variegated yarn for this scarf, and I knew right away that I wanted to use I Love This Yarn Cloudy Sea for this project. The scarf has a section that  is a solid color (the snomwan's hat brim), and I wanted to crochet this part in purple, but I couldn't find a purple that matched perfectly with the shade of purple that is in the variegated yarn. So... I went through the skein of variegated yarn, and I cut out some sections of the purple and used it to crochet the brim. I used I Love This Yarn White for the snowman's face.

Purple! This scarf is designed to have a pocket, but I didn't want to make the pocket, so I modified the brim and snowman's face sections of the scarf.

In the pattern, you make two of the snowman's face to create a pocket, but I decided not to make the pocket, so I only made one snowman piece.

I crocheted rest of the scarf with the I Love This Yarn Cloudy Sea. The pattern says to do half double crochets, but I like the way this yarn looks with single crochets, so I crocheted the main body if the scarf in single crochet stitches with a 4mm crochet hook.

I crocheted the nose with Red Heart Super Saver Pumpkin. I made the rosy cheeks with Vanna's Choice Pink. The eyes are two black plastic buttons. And I used a Clover pom pom maker to make a pom pom for the end of the scarf.

I used a yarn needle to sew on the cheeks, nose, and buttons.  I added a smile with Vanna's Choice Black

This scarf is about 58 inches long and 4.5 inches wide, and it's currently available in my Etsy shop.

  1. That's such a sweet scarf, the pom pom end is so much fun. I love your snowman's expression too. Stitched on faces can create all sorts of expressions, tiny tweaks with the placement of eyes or the curve of a smile can make such a difference, yours looks like such a fun fella!

  5. This is so cute! I love the touches that you added to his face. My son has snowman day at school this week and I couldn't think of anything to dress him in for a snowman except for all white with a hat. This would be adorable!

    1. Thanks! I love when the kids have fun days like that at school, especially if they let me know in time to create something fun and unique for them to wear. A few years ago, I crocheted a Dog Man hat for my daughter to wear on Book Character Day. That was fun! I think they're having spirit week again next week.
