Fishy Wall Decor

Welcome to the August Pinterest Challenge! The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate us to not just pin, but to make it happen! Since today is National Thrift Shop Day, we are sharing thrift/upcycle projects. I haven't visited a thrift shop lately, but I recently decided to repaint some fish I purchased from a thrift store a few years ago. I originally bought the fish for my son's nautical nursery, but now he's older and has a Spiderman themed room. So I recently decided to change my kiddos' bathroom from a Mickey Mouse theme with a black Mickey Mouse shower curtain and a black Mickey Mouse shaped rug to a brighter fish theme. So I pulled the fish from our storage shed and got to work repainting them. I also checked Pinterest for inspiration, and I found this pin of cool wooden and ceramic fish.
I bought these fish from Good Will a few years ago when my son was a baby.

For their first makeover, I painted them red, white, blue, and teal to go with the nautical themed fabric I used to created my son's crib skirt, quilt, diaper stacker, curtains, etc.

After being in storage for a few years, the fish definitely needed some work.

This is the shower curtain I bought for my children's bathroom, so I decided to use paint in a few of the colors that are in the shower curtain.

Black, white, red, and blue is one of my favorite color combinations. The paint I used for this fishy is Waverly Ink (black), Shermin Williams Reflecting Pool (blue), Shermin Williams white, and Apple Barrel Hot Rod Red.  I used a round sponge brush to create the dots.

This is my favorite fish. I painted it with Waverly Ink (black), Shermin Williams white, and Apple Barrel Hot Rod Red, and Apple Barrel Tropic Orange

I painted this small fish with the same colors as the first large fish.

This little fishy was fun to paint. I used a pencil eraser to make the dots.

I also found these fish in storage, and I touched up the paint on the red and white fish. The light blue fish was originally navy blue.

After the paint dried, I hung the fish on the wall about the towel rack.

Since this one is my favorite, I put it on the wall where the bathroom sink is, so whenever I walk by, it's the fish I'll see.

Painting these fish was fun break from crocheting, which is my main craft and hobby. And my son really liked them when he saw them on the bathroom wall. Yay!

  2. What a cool shower curtain! These fish are the perfect accent piece to go with that curtain. I never really know how to decorate my bathroom otherwise the curtain and rugs, but this is great inspiration. So neat too to see how you had repurposed them before, and now again.

  4. So cute! I just love being able to update and reuse old wall décor instead of buying new every single time I want to redecorate. The colors are beautiful together. I hope the kids enjoy the updated bathroom for many years.
