Fluffy Crochet Duster Cover

Welcome to the April Sustainable Pinterest Challenge hosted by Julie from Sum of Their Stories & Gail from Purple Hues and Me. For this month's challenge, we are using inspiration from Pinterest to create something sustainable/eco-friendly to Welcome Spring. When I think of Spring, I think of Spring cleaning to really get the house ready for the new season. I love to open up the windows to let the fresh air in. I also like to dust off the ceiling fans and make sure there aren't any cobwebs around the ceiling. And at 5'4", that's a struggle! So I recently bought a Swiffer Dusters 360 Extendable Handle Starter Kit, which makes it so much easier to clean the ceiling fans. The Swiffer Duster kit I purchased included three heavy duty dusters. These dusters are disposable, so I thought it would be cool to crochet a duster that I can wash and reuse.  Of course, I searched Pinterest for ideas, and I found a Pin for a Scrubby Duster by Snappy Tots.
I decided to use Bernat Pipsqueak yarn in the colorway Red Balloon. I thought this fluffy yarn would be great for dusting.

I followed the pattern and crocheted with a 5mm crochet hook. With this yarn, it is hard to see the stitches, so you really have to pay attention. 😁

You fold the piece in half to create a tube. This will be folded in half and placed onto the duster handle.

Next, you crochet a few rows of loops. There is an option to do an extra row of loops, but I did three rows. With this yarn, three rows of loops is full enough.

This is how the duster looks when you're finished crocheting it. Of course, you have to leave a long tail for sewing it together. You only sew a couple inches of the duster together to help keep it on the duster handle when you're using it.

The duster cover is all stitched up and ready to slide onto the duster handle and start cleaning dust.

Here's my fluffy crochet duster and the Swiffer Duster Cover.

I slid the crochet duster cover onto the Swiffer Handle...

...And I tested it out by dusting the ceiling fan in my craft room. It works pretty well!

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my duster cover! Please scroll down to check out the projects from the other Sustainable Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop participants.⇩

  1. T'onna, that is brilliant! So clever. I have a really similar duster and it does come with a removable and washable cover but it's getting pretty sad looking these days. I must have done more dusting over the years than I thought!! I'm going to make a new cover myself when it finally falls apart, such a great idea, thanks.

    1. Thanks! You should definitely make your own cover! It's such a quick project. I also have another smaller duster that came with a removable and washable cover, but it's not that fluffy, so I might make a cover for that one, too.

  2. Oh my, T'onna! If this isn't one cool sustainable project to make, I don't know what is! What a creative and unique idea to make your own duster cover. Look out Swiffer! I wish I had paid attention to my MIL when she tried to teach me to crochet! You go!

  3. Washable and reusable is the way to go, T'onna. I imagine this would be a great way to use any leftover yarn from other projects, too. Great idea!

  4. If we have to clean we might as well have snazzy looking supplies like your red duster! It also looks like your duster would do a better job than the swifter one. Pinned to spring craft board. :)

  6. This is such a cool project and fits this month's theme perfectly! I know I'm ready to do some cleaning and open my home up to the fresh spring air.

  8. Love this! I'll be featuring it Sunday on Happiness is Homemade on LifeasaLEOWife.com. I'd love to have you come link up on Crafty Creators Link Party as well as it has a different audience. It's open for posts Thursday-Monday at 11:59pm CST. If you link up to that party and are featured, I feature you across social media as well. I thought I commented on how great I thought this was after our Pinterest Challenge went live, but I guess I didn't hit publish or something! I might've hit sign out instead of "publish" because I do remember having to log in again for commenting earlier this month. I'm pinning this and will definitely be making one! Saving money is topping my to-do list right now lol!

  9. Oh my gosh that is amazing! I would never even have considered making my own dustcover - that wool looks amazingly soft and cosy! I have stuck to crocheting blankets but need to move onto different projects! Sim x #TrafficJamWeekend

  10. What a great idea. I crocheted a dusting mitt a few years ago that works great. I'll have to make one of these.
