Denim Patchwork Mackinaw Coat

One of my New Year's Resolutions is to crochet more, sew more, and try new things. So when I read about Call Ajaire's Mackinaw Coat pattern testing call, I applied. I was accepted, and then I thought, "Oh... What did I sign up for? I've never made a coat before!" I was intimidated, but I didn't quit, and now my son has a special coat made just for him by Mommy (me).

One of my New Year's Resolutions for this year is to do more upcycle/refashion projects. So for this coat, I used a brown satin bed sheet for the lining and four pairs of old jeans for the outer fabric. Yes, four pairs of jeans! I was surprised that I had to cut up that many pairs of jeans to make a coat for my little guy. I found some brown faux fur on sale to use for the collar.

Originally, I had different brown buttons on the coat, but they didn't all match. So I finally found six dark wooden buttons. I think they match the faux fur better than the other wood buttons I had on the coat.

One of my favorite parts of this coat is the back belt loop. That dark strip of denim down the middle of the coat has an opening for the coat's belt. Isn't that cool!?

I think my son is pretty happy with his new coat. It's a little big, but I'm totally fine with that because the temperatures are warming up already, so I'm hoping he'll be able to wear it next winter.
